About
The 'Meadow of Gold' lives up to its name with rolling alpine meadows, glacial streams, and some of Kashmir's most dramatic mountain scenery. Sonamarg is the gateway to the Great Lakes trek and the legendary Zoji La pass into Ladakh.
Sonamarg, meaning 'Meadow of Gold', is the last major town in Kashmir before the road ascends to Zoji La pass and descends into Ladakh. Situated at 2,740 meters, it was once an important stop on the ancient Silk Road caravan route connecting Kashmir to China.
Today, Sonamarg is beloved for its raw, unspoiled natural beauty. The Thajiwas Glacier, accessible by a short pony ride or trek, offers a stunning close encounter with ice fields even in summer. The town is also the base camp for the famous Kashmir Great Lakes trek, considered one of India's most beautiful multi-day hikes.
